now and then

as I sit here looking at the empty chair across the kitchen table

now and then I miss you

the absence of you preparing the oatmeal as only you were able

the ready smile upon your lips

what happened to the promise of tomorrow

what happened to the hope unfulfilled

leaping out of my heart as the whispered dish of sorrow

the sun rises each morning

orange red blood like drops of glory

yet I sit here paralyzed in thought

dying like the stagnant pond of algae
