A HAIKU in its purest form would focus on an aspect of nature and is shorter in length. A HAIKU is a 17 syllable verse, rather than 31 syllables as in a TANKA. In a haiku the first line has 5 syllables, the second line, 7 syllables, and the third line, 5 syllables. A Japanese poet master, Masaoka Shiki, established the modern haiku somewhere in the 1890’s. Previous to that there was a poetic form called hokku. This is my condensed version. I read about the history of the haiku, which I first learned when I was a sophomore in high school. There is probably a deeper and better explanation online.
