Ayden and the Fact about AGE

Ayden's 6th birthday

Ayden, my grandson, celebrated his 6th birthday last Thursday.  After he finished the chocolate birthday cake, he came up to me and said rather nonchalantly, “Nanny, I am 6 now but I still feel like I am 5. I don’t feel any different? I still feel like I am 5! Well, I guess I am just me!”

I found it interesting that he reflected upon his age progression in this way…that he thought he would be someone different when he woke up to his birthday…I guess some of us do feel that same way…even on days when it is not our birthday.

In any case, his easy-going response to himself, “Well, I guess I am just me!” is all that he needs to accept and know to be at home with himself during his journey through life!

Ayden reminds me of Ayden on his 6th Birthday with his sister, Nadia, 4... 2013Le Petit Prince. He has curly blonde hair and a sweet smile and disposition. He has a sensitive heart. On his birthday, as they were gathering their belongings to leave, and Ayden his presents, he said to Nadia, “When we get home, Nadia, you can play with my new toys…you can have some of them and we will play together.”

What a darling!

Little Boxes…from Annie

LITTLE  BOXES

Dedicated to Annie, my Daughter

Rummaging through the basement

I came upon the trinkets of your love in  delicate concealment

An intricate reminder of  your constant care…

Of course, YOU always have the artistic flare…

Gently placed  within a handsewn piece of pink dainty cloth

Tied with a white ribbon to keep out the moths

Two colors…green and red…colors of Christmas I did find

Led me to my heart and of your love it did remind

Outside the words were written, “Merry Christmas”

So smitten…was written your test of litmus

Of course, I knew…your love was constant

Your way of showing it without resentment

These little boxes, 1 x 2,  appear so often on my shelves

Each one is so unique and placed by my  little elf

In one you drew a picture of me asleep

With the caption”YOUR eyes wide OPEN”…did I weep?

Some things did pass me by

and gave way to many sighs

the care you gave me like a fox

with a tender little box

I treasure each one

for from your heart they did come

and now I see in your children so sweet

the deep love that you hold deep

your love is in their eyes so dear

you have groomed then well it is clear

their sensitivity and charm

comes straight from the heart and they would give their arm

just like YOU

you are ONE on a trillion, blue and true

you love your sister, through and through

no one doubts your love, yeah YOU

your love is beauty–through and through!

you give your heart

right from the start!

Annie, you are love

and a gentle dove!

invitation to fly!

“Come to the edge,” he said.

They said, “We are afraid.”

“Come to the edge,” he said.

They came. He pushed them, and they flew.

– Guillaume Apollinaire

My youngest daughter, Lara, is leaving for Togo, West Africa, in 1 more day.  Lara did not seem to need much push——she has been dreaming of this for a long time!  I am more afraid than she is!  I am her mother and she is going off into the world. She made it out of the yard… through elementary school, high school, and graduated from Marquette University, a week ago.  Now the world is there…waiting for her gifts and talents. I pray that she will be well received by those she meets and that she, in turn, will continue with her open and receptive attitude to what others offer.

She has a sense of humor and I think that will carry her far. She loved singing, Hakuna Matata from the Lion King:

Hakuna Matata! What a wonderful phrase

Hakuna Matata!   Ain’t no passing craze

It means no worries …For the rest of your day

It’s our problem-free philosophy…Hakuna Matata!

It is always important to be able to laugh at ourselves and accept our humanity and the humanity of others…to remain flexible in what we set out to be and do.

Each time, she went a bit further away from home…each experience stretched her from her roots. I pray that the people in the universe treat her kindly.  Sometimes the world is not so kind and gentle, and when she meets those times, I hope she remembers that she is always loved, and that those who love her are only a thought away. I hope she meets many loving hearts along her journey and that each experience brings her greater joy and belief in the human spirit and how much we all need one another to create a beautiful world on Mother Earth.

To say, I will miss her, in an understatement!  I know her Dad and sisters, Annie and Sara, will miss her greatly! Her Aunt Kathy will miss spoiling her and their lively conversations  and Uncle Ron will miss his scintillating political questions and thoughts on the universe that he shared with her. So she will be getting tons of mail!  But I know she must go and follow her dream. For isn’t this what we prepare our children for as mothers and fathers? We help to grow them as persons, providing food and shelter, educating them to be all that they can be,  and most importantly, bathing them in love and the importance of our connection to one another.

I left Wisconsin September 14, 1974…four months after I graduated from Marquette. I was amazed that Lara chose to go to the same university and pleased at the same time!  I ended up in Kenya, East Africa in August of 1975 for two and a half years, teaching in a rural Harambee school. Now Lara is going off to Togo, West Africa to work as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two and a half years. So amazing! Just simply amazing! How blessed we are…to be so honored to experience people of another culture! How enriching our lives are because of our experiences!

My Mom cried so much that day at the airport. I thought she thought I was dying! I had never witnessed such tears! I was young and full of adventure and out to find myself in this huge world! Now that I am 63 and I find myself in the same position as my Mom–Mom was 59 when I left…NOW I finally understand her tears! and I am feeling the separation. But I know it is right that she has to take off for the world and live her dream~!  I know it…but I am allowed my tears…yes?

I believe there is a God—a God of Love–and in that God we are called to love ourselves well, to  BE that love for one another and accept that love from the other.  I know that Lara has a strong connection to the God of Love.  I am entrusting her care to LOVE.

When Lara was in 1st grade, she wrote: “Snowmen may melt, but never your heart!”  And I know there are not many snowmen in Togo, West Africa…but there are many loving hearts waiting for her lovely heart…and we all will be with her on her journey, sending her love each day!

3. Nominate a minimum of 5 blogs for the award

4. Answer the 5 questions and Ask the nominees 5 questions of your choice

5. And finally, let them know you have nominated them.

5 things about me:

1. I love to laugh.

2. I think Carlos Santana is a master guitarist

3. I like to be with people and socialize…but I also need a break and retreat into my cocoon.

4 . I love Spring and the delicate green of the leaves!

5.  I lived in Kenya, East Africa, for over two years teaching in a rural Harambee School.

****************************************************************************************************************************************************

The inquires from Steven and my responses to his questions are:

1. I don’t like asking people questions……….do you?

No, I do not like asking people questions—when I was a teacher, I preferred students asking me questions…I better understood how to guide them in their learning.

2. Would you answer honestly?

Definitely…if I responded!  If I did not want to share my truth with them, I would remain silent and not respond.

3. Do you know who Opie Taylor is?

I have no idea! Who is he?

4. Does GM really mean Government Motors?

That does seem to be  a political question—and it would take ream of  WordPress pages to respond to that one!  Perhaps it refers to Glorified Manhood?

5. If you had a horse, what color would it be?

My color of horse would be a black and white pinto!  If someone had a farm, and wanted me to share it with them, and promised me to buy me a black and white pinto, I might even consider marriage! …IF it was to a woman!  [smile…]

Thank you for the “Most Influential Blogger?”

MIB

Thank you, Perpetua  http://theseeker57.wordpress.com, for nominating me for THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BLOGGER AWARD.

When I read the blogs of so many others, mine pales in comparison. I have read the works of great poets who go beyond the beautiful and take the courage to post those things that are not easy to read…not easy to read because they remind us of the dark side of the people who live on Mother Earth. Nevertheless, unless this darkness is brought out into the light–how will it be dispelled?  Yes, it is heartbreaking to read some of it…because it is so very difficult to comprehend how we can be so inhumane to one another.

Yet, I have lived in darkness for moments in my life also…I know how the anger seethes inside and causes one to lash out…I have tried to change who I am. I am trying each day to live in tranquility within my soul…and not to react out of my insecurities. I have tried to forgive those who judge me so harshly…to be who I am…to accept me as me…I think that is one of the difficulties in life–there is so little affirmation of the goodness of each other.

I nominate these bloggers for THE MOST INFLUENTIAL BLOGGER AWARD who have the courage to give us the beautiful but also who have the courage to present that ugly side of humanity in an effort to make us more aware and to do all we can to help each other be better people.

Sharmishtha writes poetry from her heart…her paintings are delicate…and she also posts about the greed of mankind taking over an island to make it into their heathen paradise–caring little about providing health or humanitarian aid for the people who live there…she had a posting about a young girl who was set afire alone with her mother by an angry father…Go to her many blogs and read her works…it will make your heart happy to read her poems and sad to read the horrible truths of humankind.

* Noeleen

Noeleen speaks of her struggle to BE the best mother she can in this male-dominated society…the world’s society where women and children are kept on the bottom of the rung– stepped on and abused so often.  Her fight to BE her best, will show you that she is a courageous and brave woman—my Braveheart!–She goes beyond her comfort level, risks all, to do what is best for her son, Daniel! It is a courageous testimonial of a person who fights to find herself and then goes even further to fight for the son she brought into this world!

* Sheri

sheridegrom – From the literary and legislative trenches.
sheridegrom.com x
sheri@sheridegrom.com

Sheri write beautiful book reviews that slide you write into the stories as if you were already a part of them! In addition to this, she lives in this modern world and its legalism. Thank God for women like her, who understand the legal ramifications and know how to respond to this kind of demand and dehumanization! She is an advocate for the mentally challenged and for healthcare reform. All of us know that we need it, as the poor and disenfranchised, the mentally ill, the elderly, are more and more being pushed into the margins of society and left unattended. I personally thank her for using her wisdom to help us all!

Seven Things About Me:

  1. I grew up in a town with 10 homes and everyone was a cousin to the other! NO kidding! LOL There was also:  a Church; a one-room schoolhouse that I attended for 8 years; two taverns with one that had a small grocery store attached that my grandparents once owned and my Mom lived in for her entire childhood and teenage life; and, there were also two gas stations plus my Dad’s plumbing and  heating business (I so wanted to live on a farm!).
  2. Does the first entry count as two?
  3. No, I never went to Kindergarten because there was not any in our town of 10 homes and one school-house–do you think that it shows? lol
  4. Each evening, when I was a bit older to be out on my own, I would bike to the top of the hill, facing West, and look at the beautiful sunset as it went to sleep over the Kettle Moraine Forest. That was my moment of freedom!
  5. I climbed trees when I was a kid—huge cedar trees that stood 40 feet into the air…the wind would blow freely…and I felt free!
  6. When I was a mere five years old, I walked up to this fenced in area behind a red barn near my home, and this beautiful Holstein cow came over to the fence, stuck out its tongue, and licked my face from the bottom of my chin to the top of my forehead! WOW! To be so loved and I was so stunned!
  7. Behind the shop that was attached to the farmhouse where I lived with my Mom and Dad, Aunt Gerty, and ten brothers and sisters, we younger ones had thrown a plank of wood across a gully fifteen inches deep and boldly proclaimed each evening at the supper table that we had crossed the border into Mexico!

Nominated for the WordPress Family Award!

Nominated for the WordPress Family Award!

wordpress-family-award

I feel very honored to receive this WordPress Family Award…it is a blessing to be part of a blogging community that cares so much about each other, not just as writers, but as human beings! I have grown leaps and bounds, first,  as a person and then as a writer, from the interaction that has taken place since I began writing on this blog site, October 14, 2011. I have experienced so much deep joy in the words that others write…in the honesty  in which they portray their thoughts and experiences…in their relentless care and concern for each other as gifted human beings on our Mother Earth.  A very good friend of mine, Elaine, said I should surround myself with “gentle beings.” I think becoming a part of the WORDPRESS FAMILY has given me that opportunity!  I have met so many wonderful and good people on this blog site: writers, poets, photographers, artists! I have been blessed so much!

Many times during my life I carried with me the thought of Sir James Barrie, the Scottish novelist and playwright, who penned  Peter Pan. He wrote these words:   “Those who give sunshine to the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves.”  I do not always succeed, but I try to live these words.  Perhaps, that is selfish…because I am seeking happiness…however, I think it means that by giving to others, I am being who I am meant to be….and that helps me to live happily.

These last ten years have been especially difficult for me–professionally and personally…My nephew died from a horrible disease, Myotonic Dystrophy, in 2007 at the age of 39. Then my Mom had a stroke at the age of 90…she came to live with me until she died in my home at the age of 94 in 2010. To say I miss her so much would be an understatement…60 years is a long time and I was blessed to have her with me…but still it was not enough time. Then my older sister, Barbara, died from the same myotonic dystrophy that took her son’s life, at the age of 63, in 2010,  six months after my Mom. This past March, 2013, my younger brother, Bill, died of myotonic dystrophy at the age of 61.  The losses have been great…and, of course, no one can replace them. However, the people on WordPress have accepted me as part of their family…and I cannot begin to express the intense feelings I have developed and finally feel like I belong somewhere. Thank you for your heartfelt words that have encouraged me so! I am “feeling the love” as the young people say! LOL

I think this is true of the WordPress Family.  We pass rays of sunshine  and love crystals to one another in our gift of affirmations and comments! How blessed we all are! I am full of gratitude for each of you!  And especially for dear Patty!  Thank you, Patty, [ http://petitemagique.wordpress.com%5D for your nomination! I am truly honored! and dear Shaun, my gallant knight! and my younger brave heart, Shane…dear sweet son! You inspire me so with your generous spirits and good hearts!

Now for a description of the award:

This is an award for everyone who is part of the “WordPress Family” I started this award on the basis that the WordPress family has taken me in, and showed me love and a caring side only WordPress can show. The way people take a second to be nice, to answer a question and not make things a competition amazes me here. I know I have been given many awards, but I wanted to leave my own legacy on here by creating my own award, as many have done before. This represents “Family” we never meet, but are there for us as family. It is my honor to start this award.” from Shaun @ http://prayingforoneday.wordpress.com/

The Rules:

1. Display the award logo on your blog.
2. Link back to the person who nominated you.

3. Nominate 10 others you see as having an impact on your WordPress experience and family.

4. Let your 10 Family members know you have awarded them. There is a real problem here since this award spread like wildfire but I think I can find ten who should be recognized

5. That is it. Just please pick 10 people who have taken you as a friend, and spread the love

http://prayingforoneday.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/dragonsloyaltyaward.jpg

Thank you to dear Shaun for nominating me for the “Dragon Loyalty Award.”   You are so gallant and strong…and your blog is that of an Honest Knight!  Dear Shaun, you wrote:   “I have a great life, I am blessed, but when the hurt comes, I turn to you, Word Press..And you help me.. I hope I help you back, just a little” —- your words have helped me a great deal! Thank you for being a blogger and sharing your truth so beautifully!

Seven Facts about me:

1.  I seem to love to laugh…more and more…and not to “cover up” pain…I feel so happy! and it is WONDERFUL!  I have been sad long enough in my life…and now I think there is something more…deeper joy!

2.  I love to plant trees…unfortunately, due to last summer’s drought, trees that I watched grow for 2o years, are now dying. But today, my neighbor gave me 4 more trees to plant! How kind and generous of  Ellen!

3.  I am blessed with beautiful people in my life…my family…my daughters…my grandchildren..LOVE!

4.  I do enjoy playing Canasta and Gin Rummy…occasionally.

5.  I would love to learn French, Spanish, Hindi and Chinese.  I know one or two phrases in each. Now time for some serious studying! LOL

6.  Sometimes I get very lonely…and depressed…and I turn to my writing to free myself…and then I get responses from the wonderful WordPress family and all is well!  Since I have begun daily meditation, I am doing so much better…I see how important it is to return to the Center…to find balance.

7. I believe in the GOD of LOVE—and I am open to all forms of spirituality….because, honestly, I think we are all ONE in LOVE. We are all water love crystals, gifting each other along the way…just like a bag of marshmellows when placed in the microwave—they all become ONE! So we are marshmellows of love crystals full of love sugar and whichever religion, spirituality, view gets you to believe in yourself and the goodness of others is a wonderful, tremendous gift!
