If you don’t celebrate Easter but enjoy learning about other families’

customs this post may still be a good one to read. If you follow a

different religion or you don’t practice any at all, you still could add

something new to this post. Help make it multicultural and allow

us to “cross borders” into friendship together.  Although Easter eggs

were once considered part of pagan Spring festivals, they have

become Christian symbols of new life in recent times.

A cracked open eggshell could represent

and symbolize Jesus’ empty

tomb on Easter morning.

Coloring eggs can be elaborate projects, I have always enjoyed looking

at Ukrainian eggs with their pen and ink display of designs.  Our family

usually just used crayons to make designs on our hard boiled eggs

for Easter. Then, with the pungent smell of vinegar and the Paas egg

coloring dyes, we would put our eggs on…

Promise~

the day breaks into song unfolding before us

the moments shared are beyond measure

Promise~

the ice leaves the shore

the water flows, refreshing our view

Promise~

the tiny bulbs in the ground

bring daffodils into Spring

Promise~

the crayon drawing of your purple hair and golden teeth

speak of love unspoken

laced with hope, flowered with petals of compassion

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! (I claim to be Irish every year –LOL)

For all of my readers and blogging friends~

“May God give you…

    For every storm, a rainbow…

    for every tear, a smile…

    for every care, a promise…

and an answer for each prayer.”

Youthful Enthusiasm

Each Spring, the inevitable “lake” forms  in the center of my driveway, as time has passed, wear and tear have caused the foundation to sink into the ground.  I do not have the means to repair the driveway, and each year I wonder  if I will be able to take the car out of the garage and navigate across the lake without submerging my vehicle.

This year my concerns regarding the lake shifted to my grandchildren, who have to leave the school bus on the road opposite my driveway, and somehow, circumnavigate the lake, with only a muddy lawn as an alternate route.

Pondering this dilemma, I remarked to Ayden, my “almost 8”  year old grandson, “Ayden, what are you going to do when you get off the bus tomorrow and see that huge lake in our driveway!?”  For me, it was more an expression of exasperation than a question.

He replied enthusiastically, “Look out puddle, here I come!”              IMAG5112 (1)

Mrs.Schultz and the Watkins’ Products

The morning was dreary

and the day proclaimed length

and there at the door

was a gentle knock

“Ma, Mrs. Schultz is here with the Watkins’ Products!”

Excitement abounded in the house

with the prospect of smelling the latest bottled spices and

getting a whiff of the vanilla aroma

Mom, with eleven children of her own,

always seemed to come up with some money to buy from Mrs. Schultz

Who had a genuine smile when selling her wares

She had several children ( Kathryn was in my class

I envied her lanky height…tall and thin…and a

gentle spirit with a kind smile)

Mrs. Schultz’s  husband had injured himself at work

So she had to find a way to support the family.

To me, her tired eyes carried the world

but her ready smile made me happy she had come.

A day growing up

Witnessing the exchange between two mothers

Living their lives and contributing their best

For each other’s success

Racism in Poverty Alleviation and A Request

Thoughts from Chelsea, a friend to my daughter, Lara.  Both are serving the Peace Corps in Togo and have been there for the past year and a half.

hopeorsomething's avatarWaking Up in Togo

I haven’t written here about my philosophy of development because it is conflicted, contextual, and changeable. I don’t like going on public, permanent record right now about something that can be described as such. But I’m going to make a request, so it behoves me.

You all are so giving and so supportive of everything I do that I could probably raise money just by posting the link on Facebook, no long-winded explanation necessary. But. It is really important to me that you understand my philosophy, more important than receiving money for a project, actually.

To summarize, I don’t like hand-outs. I like working with people on projects that they have identified, things that they are motivated to do in order to improve their lives. If I’m involved in Togo, I want to be a supporter, not the engine driving the change. Even in my home community, I need to…
